UC Berkeley Chemist Dr. Gabor Somorjai Wins 2011 Honda Prize

Hendrick Honda of Woodbridge, Va is pleased to announce that Dr. Somorjai, professor of Chemistry at the University of California Berkeley, U.S.A., has been awarded the 2011 Honda prize for his important work in surface science. The Honda Prize recognizes achievements by individuals in the area of ecotechnology – the application of science and technology in an ecologically friendly manner.
The Prize is awarded annually by the Honda Foundation.  Dr. Somorjai received the award in Tokyo on November 17th, 2011.  In addition to the prize medal and certificate, a cash award of over $125,000 was also presented to the laureate.
Dr. Somorjai’swork revolutionizedthe field of surface science and catalytic chemistry and made it possible to create a number of products in use today with minimal chemical waste and pollution.  To put it very simply, a catalyst makes chemical reactions happen, usually faster and more efficiently.  The advances by Dr. Somorjai in this area are considered the basis for green chemistry, chemistry that has a minimal or reduced impact on the environment.

Products that have been manufactured using green chemistry include fertilizers, catalytic converters, fuel cells, and ultrathin coatings of metal, glass, and semiconductor surfaces.  Dr. Somorjai’sdiscoveries continue to be used in the fields of medicine, microelectronics, biochemistry, photochemistry, and magnetic storage industry. He has been hailed as the ‘father of modern surface chemistry’.

The Honda Prize epitomizes Honda’s commitment to environmentally responsible manufacturing.  Here at Hendrick Honda of Woodbridge, we share that commitment and take pride in selling vehicles that not only represent the highest standards of quality, but also are built in a way that ensures the health and well-being of the places where we live and work.
